My Book Club recommendation for May is “Atlas of the Heart” by Brené Brown.

I absolutely love her work. I wish I could download her brain so I could recall, react and be the best version of myself at any given time under any possible circumstances. I love learning about the importance of language and the words we use. I have found this to be so important for me in trying to express myself.

This book is about “If we want to find the way back to ourselves and one another, we need language and the grounded confidence to both tell our stories and to be stewards of the stories that we hear. In Atlas of the Heart, we explore eighty-seven of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human and walk through a new framework for cultivating meaningful connection. This is for the mapmakers and travelers in all of us.”

In the book she defines and explains the following words:

Stress, overwhelm, anxiety, worry, avoidance, excitement, dread, fear, vulnerability, comparison, admiration, reverence, envy, jealousy, resentment, schadenfreude, freudenfreude, boredom, disappointment, expectations, regret, discouragement, resignation, frustration, awe, wonder, confusion, curiosity, interest, surprise, amusement, bittersweetness, nostalgia, cognitive dissonance, paradox, irony, sarcasm, anguish, hopelessness, despair, sadness, grief, compassion, pity, empathy, sympathy, boundaries, comparative suffering, shame , self-compassion, disconnection, insecurity, invisibility, flooding, hurt, love, lovelessness, heartbreak, trust, self-trust, betrayal, defensiveness, flooding hurt, joy, happiness, calm, contentment, gratitude, foreboding, joy, relief, tranquility, anger, contempt, disgust, dehumanization, hate, sef-righteousness, pride, hubris and humility.
